Build your ability to define risk management scope, document risk factors and drive the evaluation of a risk management process. Also further your skills in using an organisation’s WHS Management System (WHSMS) and WHS Information System (WHSIS).
BSBWHS512	Contribute to managing work-related psychological health and safety	Be equipped to address growing requirements for organisations to manage psychosocial hazards and risks to the same degree as physical ones. Build your understanding of key trends and legislative consideration for psychological health and safety. Also develop your ability to identify psychosocial hazards, assess their risk and implement appropriate control methods.
BSBWHS520	Manage implementation of emergency procedures	Learn how to implement initial short-term responses to workplace emergencies. In this unit, you’ll explore a range of workplace emergency response equipment and precautions. You’ll also develop your ability to prioritise options for containing emergencies and their impacts.
BSBWHS518	Manage WHS hazards associated with maintenance and use of plant	Discover how you can navigate safety hazards associated with the use of plant; that is, the use of items such as machinery, equipment, appliances and other tools. Learn how to apply systematic approaches to identifying and resolving WHS issues. Also build your ability to overcome plant registration, licensing, certification and maintenance issues.
BSBWHS515	Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents	Be equipped to lead the initial response to WHS incidents that happen in the workplace. Learn how to effectively plan and conduct investigations into WHS incidents that have resulted in, or have the potential to result in, injury or damage. Then report on the outcomes of your investigation, providing clear conclusions and recommendations.
BSBWHS516	Contribute to developing, implementing and maintaining an organisation’s WHS management system	Further your understanding of key components of a Work Health and Safety Management System (WHSMS). Learn how to develop and implement a WHSMS for an organisation, then oversee its maintenance. Also build your understanding of how to ensure a WHSMS complies with relevant WHS Acts, regulations, standards and codes of practice.
BSBWHS519	Lead the development and use of WHS risk management tools	Discover how to lead the development of useful WHS risk management tools, such as those relating to WHS checklists, analyses, manifests, registers, inspections, method statements and more. Also learn how to implement WHS risk management tools, gather data on their use by employees and critically analyse the tools’ usefulness and usability.
BSBWHS522	Manage WHS consultation and participation processes	Extend your knowledge and skills in WHS consultation. Build your ability to oversee the implementation of WHS consultation, including reviewing its effectiveness and addressing areas of improvement. Also develop your skills in guiding others in conducting WHS consultations.
BSBCMM411	Make presentations	Build your ability to deliver engaging and effective presentations. Discover approaches you can use to prepare and plan your presentations. Also explore a range of techniques you can use to gain your audience’s attention and persuasively communicate information.
BSBSUS411	Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices	Discover how businesses can take action to improve their impacts on the physical environment. In this unit, you’ll analyse an organisation’s work practices. Then propose and implement approaches to make these more environmentally friendly. By the end of this unit, you’ll have gained foundational sustainability skills that can help open doors to a career in Health Safety and Environment (HSE).

Australia’s Model WHS Laws are evolving. Now’s a great time to enhance your WHS skills and knowledge – On 5 December 2025, Safe Work Australia released significant amendments to the national model Work Health and Safety Act (Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer LLP, 2026). If you’re looking to pursue a career in WHS, now is an excellent time to deepen your understanding of WHS compliance requirements.

After completing the Diploma of Work Health and Safety, you may wish to further extend your skills and knowledge by studying the:

WHS Law Essentials short course – This comprehensive two-day course has been designed to build essential legal knowledge that will enable you to fulfil your WHS obligations effectively. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to meet your legal WHS responsibilities for creating safer workplaces.
Diploma of Sustainable Operations – This can open the door to roles in WHSE (Work Health Safety and the Environment). You’ll expand your job opportunities and have more chances to increase your salary.
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment – This can enable you to become a WHS trainer. Choose to train students at a private college or TAFE, or become someone who trains employees within a business. You’ll have the flexibility to become a full-time, part-time or casual trainer.

Entry requirements

Domestic Students
To study this course, you need to be 18 years of age or older at the time of your enrolment.

You’ll also need to be a graduate of the BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or have successfully completed all five core units in this course. This includes the following units:

BSBWHS412 Assist with workplace compliance with WHS laws

BSBWHS413 Contribute to implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes

BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk management

BSBWHS415 Contribute to implementing WHS management systems

BSBWHS416 Contribute to workplace incident response

Please note: Having access to a workplace is preferred, but not essential.

You will also need have access to appropriate technology. This includes a computer with a reliable internet connection and browsing ability, word processing applications such as Word and Spreadsheet applications such as Excel. We recommend Microsoft Office Suite.
